In order to be good at something, you have to be willing to suck at first and maybe even look silly! If you can come to peace with those two things, you really have a chance at starting something new today that could very well change the direction of your life.
Most of us have a picture in our mind of how we want things to be different and a good portion of us even know the steps we have to take to make those things happen. Yet, we don’t…
So why aren’t more of us doing more of the things to get us to the end goals that we crave and sometimes ache for? You know, the ones that are on our resolution list and on the I’m going to start this tomorrow list? (That’s my favorite by the way).
Honestly, I think it’s because we’ve been brainwashed to think that things happen over night and we’ve forgotten that it takes so many small decisions and choices throughout each and every day to actually make progress towards our goals.
We’ve let our desire for instant gratification, “overnight” success and quick, easy fixes hold us back from actually doing things.
We’ve let the fact that it will take time to see change and achieve the goals be the excuse for not doing anything.
It takes knowing ourselves, our excuses that we justify as reasons to make anything happen. You’re probably thinking, what?! Hear me out, I believe that the first stage of change is knowing what you want or don’t want anymore. That’s the “easy” part.
Next up is to outline how we are going to get there which is not as hard as most make it. I guarantee you that after a quick Google search of your goal you will be bombarded with all sorts of different approaches. Read through them and figure out a plan from there. You do not have to recreate the wheel…
Then and this is the toughest part, you have to do the things you’ve said you are going to do!
At the beginning, you may feel excitement, optimism and hope and that will help you rock your TO DO list with enthusiasm. About a handful of days later, you’ll wonder why you can’t see the change that you have been working at for “so long” and this is a pivotal point –
You are going to have to do the exact opposite of what you feel like doing! You are going to have to drag yourself through things that in days prior were so much easier (because of that enthusiasm of starting something new).
That’s when most allow their excuses to turn into reason why they can’t continue working towards their goals. It’s important to know that this happens to ALL OF US! There is nothing wrong with you for wanting to give up, that’s a very human thought and a very unoriginal one. There is something wrong if you insist that you want something yet don’t do the things you need to do to get it.
The truth is you can.
Reach out to me on those days that you feel like it’s not worth it and I’ll happily remind you that it is, that you are.
